욕망, 갈등, 변이로 진화되는 문화 - 그 또 하나의 자화상

“나는 세상의 변화와 이에 적응하는 방법을 관찰한다. 그리고 반문한다. 과연 어떤 현상들이 일어나고 변용되는지... 또한 나는 어디쯤에 있는지...” 유의정의 작업노트 중에서
전 세계의 문화를 언제 어디서든 동시에 공유할 수 있는 디지털시대에 있어 문화적 교류와 그 차용 (借用)및 변용(變容)은 우리에게 또 다른 정체성의 문제점을 부여하고 있다. 그가 성장했던 시절은 서구의 문화가 풍부하게 수용되었던 1980년대로 88올림픽 이후 더욱 다양해진 문화 교류로 서구의 상품들이 낯설진 않았던 시기이다. 이러한 유년시기를 보냈던 작가는 텔레비전이나 영화관에서 디즈니 만화를 보며 자랐으며, 코카콜라의 맛에 길들여져 있었고, 브랜드의 이미지에서 오는 권력을 쉽게 접할 수 있었다. 만화 캐릭터들 중 까마귀를 부정적인 일의 상징으로 흑인을 비유한 것과 같은 서구 백인들의 우월성을 강조한 인종차별적인 면과, 중독성이 있는 광고와 맛으로 전 세계를 지배한 미국적 상품, 명품이 상징하는 부(富)의 위력과 욕망들처럼 이러한 대상에 내재된 텍스트들에 의해 왜곡되는 우리들의 정체성에 관해 유의정은 ,
또한 이러한 작품들에 복합적으로 보이는 또 하나의 경향은 전쟁의 이미지이다. 이는 아직도 휴전 상태인 한국의 정치적 상황과 이 땅에 남자로 태어나 한번쯤 경험하게 되는 군 생활과 지속적으로 학습되어진 사고와 연계해 보았을 때, 그의 작업에서 보이는 전쟁의 이미지는 그다지 생소한 일도 아닐 것이다. 이렇듯 군복에서 볼 수 있는 문양과 전쟁의 영웅을 상징하는 조각상들은 그의 작업에 있어 문화적 무기로 작용하여 그 어떤 전쟁보다도 영향력 있는 제압과 전파의 역할을 하고 있다. 기실 작가의 2008년 이전의 작품들에서 이러한 현상들이 두드러졌으나 이후 새로운 변혁을 맞으면서 콜라주 형태와 조각적 표현으로 조합되어 하나의 연작으로 표현되고 있다. 이렇듯 유의정의 작품들에서 보여 지는 형태들은 일상에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 대상들의 재해석으로 그가 살아온 환경과 밀접한 관계를 유지하고 있다.
이러한 작업들은 유의정에게 있어 특유의 작업방식으로 표현되고 있는데, 그는 도자기 표면을 마치 캔버스와 같이 사용하여 매끈한 표면 위에 그가 지닌 경험과 환상 그리고 욕망을 콜라주 (collage), 포토몽타쥬 (photomontage), 데쿠파주(découpage)등의 다양하고 복잡한 조합의 표현방법을 통하여 그의 내러티브를 표현한다. 치밀한 계획아래 다양한 기법의 이용과 반복적 소성(燒成), 그리고 이질적 매체의 조합은 장르를 넘어선 표현가능성의 탐구이다. 도자기라는 전통을 상징하는 매체에 일상에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 상품의 로고라든지 네온사인, 전구, 모터 등과 같은 산업화에 따른 기계적인 장치 등을 이용하면서 전통의 기반 안에 현대성을 부여하고 있다. 이는 보는 이로 하여금 전통과 현대라는 고정관념을 깨고 새로운 정체성을 확립하여 Hybrid적인 진화형 도자기를 만든다 할 수 있겠다. 이러한 장르간의 동화와 융합은 유의정에게 있어 전통적 공예개념에 대한 도전이기도 하며, 예술과 공예가 그 근원적인 길이 동등하며 그 표현의 동질성을 확보하여 공예로서의 한계성을 넘어 그 벽을 무너뜨리고 있는 것을 보여주는 시도라 할 수 있다. 이러한 시도들 저변에 많은 고뇌와 갈등이 있었음에 이제 더욱 값진 작업으로 세상에 선보여지는 이번 전시에 많은 이들이 유의정의 작업에서 자신을 발견하고 소통할 수 있는 계기가 될 수 있길 바란다.
Evolving culture by desire, conflict and mutation – the other self-portrait
“I observe transition of the world and its adaptation process. And I cross-examine. What is truly happening… and where exactly am I…” – Yoo eui jeong
We are living in a digital world where we can easily experience a variety of cultures and this interchange of different cultures could cause an issue of one’s identity. He grew up in the eighties when 88’Seoul Olympic Games became the starting point of accepting Western culture in Korea. Western products are no longer unfamiliar to him. He enjoyed Disney animation through the television or the movie theater; he was accustomed to the taste of Coca-Cola; he was exposed to the power of the brand image. 유의정 talks about the distorted identities that are influence by discriminative comic images, addictive advertisement and taste of American products, and brand-name products symbolize the wealth and desire. From his works ,
He often uses image of war in his works periodically. Since he was born and raised in Korea where all male citizens is obligated to serve in a army because of a state of armistice, the image of war might not be a strange thing to him. From his work, camouflage pattern and statues of war heroes becomes powerful cultural weapon dominating audience. These manifestations were highly visible from his works before 2008, and then he emphasize on collage and sculptural __EXPRESSION__. The forms that he uses are ordinary objects that can be easily found in our lives and they are closely connected with his memory and background.
He uses ceramic as a canvas and narrates his own experience, fantasy and desire by using techniques of decalcomania, collage and photomontage. Under the elaborated plan, he continuously investigates on a variety of techniques, repetitive firing process and combination of different medium and genre. Ceramic is combined with industrial objects such as neon sign, light bulb and motor; it creates modernistic atmosphere on traditional object. It defines new identity by breaking a fixed idea of tradition and modern and becomes hybrid ceramic. These adaptation and amalgamation of different genres shows the change within a notion of traditional ceramic. It also implies the collapsing of the wall between modern art and craft.
Through the unbearable agony and conflict, Yoo Eui Jeong continuously strives to break walls after walls towards the world. I hope this is a good opportunity to experiencing his journey of hide and seek
