STATEMENT
The vessel is, of course, a utilitarian form.
기는 당연히 실용적인 형태이다.
But there are vessels that are simply decorative;
they exist without flowers being arranged or food being served in them.
단순히 장식적인 기들도 있지만, 그것은 꽃을 꽂아놓거나 음식을 내놓는데 사용하지는 않는다.
These vessels are as a matter of course placed for
appreciation in the entrance hall of a house or in its Tokonoma alcove.
이런 기형태들은 집의 입구나 토코노마 알코브(일본식 주택의 장식적인 벽)에
감상을 위해 자리하게 된다.
Most such pieces are referred to as craft objects,
but these transcend the crafts, which by nature are useful.
대부분의 이러한 작품들은 공예품이라고 일컬어지지만,
공예품을 초월해 실용성을 선척적으로 갖는다.
If they are simply decorative pieces, in fact,
there is no need for them to make the vessel form.
단순히 장식적인 작품이라면, 사실상 기의 형태로 만들 필요가 없다.
The categories "fine art" and"craft" have long been present in Japan,
but today, for most people, the boundaries between them are vague.
일본에서 "순수미술'과 '공예'라는 카테고리는 오랜 시간동안 존재해왔다.
하지만, 대부분의 사람들에게는 그 경계가 모호하다.
Perhaps that is because people are more
comfortably looking at craft pieces,
which seem more approachable and familiar than
the unfamiliar mysterious presence we call fine art.
아마도 그것은 사람들이 공예 작품을 보는 것이 더 편하다고 느끼기 때문이다.
공예 작품은 우리가 '순수미술'이라고 부르는 거리가 멀고
신비로운 존재보다 더 접근성이 높고, 친숙하기 때문이다.
The vessel form may thus be one type of device used in the studio crafts,
like the painting and the frame in the fine arts.
그러므로 기라는 형태는 우리가 순수미술이라는 틀 안에 있는 회화처럼,
스튜디오 공예에서 사용되는 장치(사물)중 하나일 수도 있다.
Whether art or craft,
I want to offer work that is intensely conscious of that category,
that framework, to explore what I myself felt.
예술이든 공예이든, 나는 강렬하게 그 카테고리, 그 틀,
내가 느낀 그 무엇을 탐험하는 데에 의식하는 작업을 하고자 한다.
What spurred me to create this series of works was the idea
that they might generate some insight, If featured in an intriguing way;
works that are situated on that ambiguous boundary.
이런 연작을 만드는 데에 나를 자극했던 것은, 아주 흥미로운 방식으로 제공된다면,
작업이 규정되지 않고 여러가지로 해석될 수 있어,
그들이 어쩌면 통찰력을 가질 수 있다는 생각이었다.
