My work speaks to the complicated and often contradictory relationships
humans maintain with other animals.
나의 작업은 사람과 동물이 가지는 복잡하고도 상반되는 관계에 대해 이야기한다.
We have taken great measures to keep the wild,
unpredictable and problematic aspects of nature at bay,
and yet we also cannot resist the need to be connected to that which we came from.
우리는 다양한 방법으로 야생의 거칠고, 예측불허하고 문제 있는 모습을 다스려왔다.
하지만 우리는 아직도 우리가 태어난 자연과 연결된 필요성을 거부할 수 없다.
In today's increasingly nature deprived society our most intimate connection
with the natural world tends to be sith plants and animals
that we ourselves have drastically altered through the process of domestication.
지나치게 자연이 배제된 상태의 우리 현대사회에서 자연과 가장 밀접한 연결을 가지는 것은
우리가 길들이는 과정에서 변형된 식물이나 동물들이다.
Wild animals have been turned into pets, genetically sculpted into sweeter, cuter,
less dangerous versions of themselves, permanently altered by man’s effort to fulfill their need for relentless love, amusement and companionship.
야생동물들은 애완동물로 귀엽고 예쁘고 덜 위험 하도록 유전적으로 변형되었다.
오로지 사람들의 변함없는 사랑, 즐거움과 우정에 대한 필요성으로 인해 영원히 변형된 것이다.
Meanwhile, our homes have become barriers that keep the wild out,
yet they are filled with caged animals, potted plants and
countless other controlled and contrived representations of the natural world.
야생은 케이지에 갇힌 동물들, 화분에 담긴 식물들,
그리고 수많은 다른 지배당하고 어색하게 갇힌 자연 세계의 재현인데도 불구하고,
우리의 가정에서는 야생의 것들이 집안으로 들어오는 것을 막기 위한 벽을 쌓아왔다.
My work aims to illustrate the evidence of both our dominance over
and our affection for nature, as well as the cohabitation of our unease and desires regarding it.
나의 작업은 우리가 자연에게 갖는 지배와 사랑, 그 둘의 증거로서의 설명을 목표로 한다.
또한, 동물과 인간이 상생하는 데에 대한 불안감과 욕망에 대해서도 이야기하고자 한다.
