The pieces I create appropriate and incorporate elements of form, decoration, color, image and material that are distinct to particular cultures and time periods. They are a reflection of my love for historical ceramic objects and their ability to provide a unique view of the past. I am fascinated by the effect of environment and resources in the evolution of these objects and the imprint of the cultures in which they were created.

The forms and decorative motifs I use in my work are appropriated from historical references from various cultural origins–Chinese, Korean, French, Dutch, English, etc. These evolve from their original source, simulating an organic development of form and pattern as a visual language.

Through my work, I enjoy challenging preconceptions of identity and systems of belief leaving the viewer to construct the context and/or narrative of the object based on their own perspective and experience. This includes questioning the role that intent and context play in determining the value of an object.

나는 특정한 문화와 시대에 따라 구별되는 형태, 장식, 색상, 이미지 및 재료의 요소들을 결합하여 작품을 제작한다. 나의 작품들은 과거를 엿볼 수 있는 역사적인 도자 오브제에 대한 나의 애정을 반영하고 있다. 도자기의 발전에 있어서 도자기가 만들어 진 당시의 환경과 자원의 및 문화의 흔적 등은 나를 매료시킨다.

내가 작업에서 사용하는 형태와 장식의 모티브는 다양한 문화적 근원의 역사적인 문헌들(중국어, 한국어, 프랑스어, 네덜란드어, 영어, 기타 등등) 로부터 차용되었다. 본래의 형태와 패턴을 모방해서 만들면서 점차 시각언어로써 발전하게 되었다.

나의 작업을 통해서, 나는 관람객들이 그들만의 관점과 경험에서 비롯된 도자 오브제에 대한 컨텍스트와 네러티브를 구축하도록 하면서 정체성의 선입관이나 신념 체계에 도전하는 것을 즐거워한다. 이것은 도자기의 가치를 매길 때 사용되는 의도와 맥락의 역할에 대한 의문을 포함하기도 한다.
