■ 내용

“여행은 새로움으로의 열망이 아닌 나로 향하는 의지이며 귀환을 전제로 완성된다.”

작가 이헌정에게 있어서 작품 활동은 ‘여행’이다. ‘도예’는 이 여행의 출발점인 동시에 되돌아가는 베이스캠프이다. 예술 세계 곳곳을 여행하듯 끊임없이 새로운 것을 시도하고 있는 작가는 ‘도예’를 시작점이자 근본에 두고 디자인, 공예, 순수미술, 건축 등 여러 장르를 넘나들며, 한계를 규정하지 않고 조각, 설치, 가구, 회화 등 다양한 매체로 작업을 이어가고 있다. 자신만의 조형언어로 서로 다른 장르, 매체, 표현 양식 간의 경계를 무너뜨리고 서로를 연결시키면서 예술의 새로운 가능성을 제시한다. 재료나 조형적인 측면에서 전통적인 것과 현대적인 것의 조화를 추구하며 독자적인 스타일을 구축하고 있는 이헌정은 다양한 감성과 영역을 포괄하는 작품을 만드는 작가라는 평가를 받고 있다.

전시의 부제 ‘끝나지 않은 여행’은 그가 자신을 설명할 때 즐겨 쓰는 ‘삶과 예술을 여행한다’라는 표현에서 빌렸다. 이헌정의 작품 세계를 이해하는데 중요한 개념인 ‘여행’은 장소의 이동과 사유의 확장을 뜻하는데, 여행이 낯섦과 새로움의 교차점이듯 재료와 형식의 경계에서 감각과 표현의 이상적인 균형을 추구하는 작가의 예술관을 만나 볼 수 있다. 이번 전시는 도예의 재료가 되는 ‘흙’을 주제로 그 외형이 아닌 본질을 중심으로, 흙과 불의 예술적 질료로써의 표현 가능성을 보여주는 작품들로 구성되어 있다.

영감의 원천인 ‘흙’이 사유와 손(노동)을 거쳐 가마 안으로 들어가 비로소 불을 만나 우연의 결과물로 탄생한 작품들은 여행의 종착점이 아닌 아직 ‘끝나지 않은 여행’의 중요한 한 부분이 된다. 특히 이번 전시는 공간과 작품의 조화가 흥미롭다. 일반적인 전시 공간의 화이트 큐브와 달리, 모양과 크기가 제 각각인 여러 개의 방으로 이루어진 파라다이스 ZIP은 오래된 단독주택을 개조한 공간이다. 이헌정 작가는 각 공간에 켜켜이 쌓인 시간과 그 속에 녹아 있는 사람들의 삶의 흔적을 성찰하면서 작품 하나하나를 두었다. 공간과 작품이 어우러지면서 만들어 내는 이야기에 관람객의 상상력이 더해지면서 비로소 이 여행은 완성된다.

"Journey is not the desire for the new but is the will toward myself, and is complete with the condition of return."

To artist Hunchung Lee, working on art is a 'journey' and 'ceramics' is both the starting point and the base camp to return to of this journey. AS though traveling different artsy areas around the globe, Lee places 'ceramics' as the starting point and basis and moves across different genres like design, craft, fine art, and arch architecture. Unlimiting himself to any particular boundaries, he continues his works in various genre, media, idiom and connecting  them back together. striving for harmony between traditional and contemporary materials and formation while also forming kis own style, Lee is recognized as an artist who creates works that embrace diverse sensitivities and domains. 

The subtitle of the show, 'unfinished journey', comes form a frequently used phrase when he describes himself, 'traveling through life and art'. 'Journey', an important concept when understanding Lee's artwork, signifies movement in space and expansion of a cause. As Journey is the intersection of unfamiliarity and originality, on can find Lee's perspective on art as he strives for the idealistic balance between sense and __EXPRESSION__ from the boundary between material and formality. Subject exhibition focuses on the essence of ceramics, 'soil', composing of works that illustrate the expressive possibilities of soil and fire as artistic materials. Soil the source of inspiration, is molded with a purpose and hand(labor), meets fire at least by being placed into the kiln and is born as the result of coincidence. Instead of being the destination of a journey, these works become an important feature in a 'journey that hasn't ended'

It is especially amusing to see the harmony of spacer and works in this  exhibition. Unlike a typical white cube space, Paradise Zip is a renovated old house and has a collection of rooms with all different shapes and sizes. Contemplating on the layers of time and signs of life in each space, artist carefully placed each artwork on by one. As space and artworks harmonize to develop a story and audience add their creativity, this journey is the finally complete.
