食에서 式으로 : 도예의 새로운 지평

문명의 시작부터 인류의 역사와 함께한 ‘도예’는 시대적 변화를 수용하며 창조적인 행위로 진화되어왔다. 의식주의 영역에서 ‘食’만을 담아내는 도구였던 도자는 기능적·감각적으로 다양화되며 인간의 삶 그 자체인 ‘式’을 담아내는 소통의 도구에 이르러 표현의 방식을 확대해 나갔다. 이 같은 변화는 흙을 소재로 하는 예술의 범주가 무한정으로 확장된다는 것을 의미하고, 도예에서 탈장르현상이 가속화되며 전통적인 형식을 탈피하여 작가 중심의 주체적인 표현공간이 되어간다는 것을 시사한다.

신동원은 이처럼 탈장르적 경향과 함께 도예의 ‘기능성’을 배제하고 ‘장인’으로서가 아닌 ‘예술가’로서의 작품을 제작한다. 도예를 전공함으로써 흙이라는 소재를 선택하는 것은 필연적이지만, 그의 작품은 전통적인 도자 기형을 고수하는 다른 도예 작가와 분명히 차별화되어 있다. 작업의 궤적은 도자이지만 평면회화나 조각 나아가 설치작업까지 아우른다.

이번 전시는 그 규모를 확장하여 공간전체를 이차원 평면의 설치작업과 삼차원으로 다시금 회귀된 항아리 작업으로 구성한다. 그의 작업에는 덴마크 왕실의 도자기인 로열코펜하겐의 패턴과 우리나라 전통 도자기와 자수에서 차용한 꽃의 문양 그리고 우리 주변에서 볼 수 있는 풀이나 꽃 모양이 결합되어 있다. 번지듯 상감된 문양은 이질적일 수 있는 여러 요소들이 회화적으로 아름답게 병치되는 효과를 가져온다. 이 패턴이 상감된 항아리, 술병 그리고 그릇과 같은 기형들은 긴 끈으로 설기듯 묶여서 부유하는데, 작가는 이 끈을 철화기법으로 끈 무늬를 재치있게 표현한 조선의 ‘백자철화끈무늬병’에 매료되어 차용하였다고 한다. 떨어질 듯 아슬아슬한 주전자, 중력을 거스르는 물방울들, 자유롭게 춤추는 기형들의 그 위태로운 구조가 한데 어울려 전하는 역동성은 무질서적인 공간의 확장을 가져오고, 이들을 잇는 긴 끈을 따라 우리의 시선이 이동하고 이 과정에서 의미들은 다시금 재조합된다. 동서양이 혼재되고 과거와 현재, 전통과 현대의 흐름을 교차시키며 그 에너지를 시각적으로 형상화한다. 이처럼 신동원은 도자라는 소재를 통해 이차원과 삼차원을 넘나들며 세계를 연결한다. 분리와 비접촉이 당연한 삶의 양식으로 자리 잡은 최근, 작가는 우리에게 가장 필요한 ‘연결과 조화’라는 옛스러우나 이제는 신선한 시각을 선사한다. 지금까지 우리와 교감하는 도자를 통해서.

The New Horizons of Ceramics

This exhibition has expanded its scale to create the entire display space into a two-dimensional plane installation art and a regressive three-dimensional Ceramics piece. Her works encompass the pattern of Royal Copenhagen-a Danish royal porcelain, patterns of flowers borrowed from Korean traditional ceramics and embroidery, and common grass/flower shapes that can be seen around our daily lives. The obscure inlaid pattern juxtaposes various heterogeneous elements in an aesthetic imagery. The jars, liquor bottles, and bowls that contain such patterns are suspended with long strings, allowing each piece to float on the walls in harmony. This technique is a citation of Joseon dynasty’s “White Porcelain Bottle with String Design in Underglaze Iron” which witfully portrays stripe patterns with iron painting technique. The dynamics of the seemingly unstable structure of the hanging kettle, water droplets that float against gravity, and freely dancing deformities bring about the expansion of the disorderly space. Our eyes move along the long string that connects these objects to recombine the message of each work in the same process. The co-representation of the East and the West intersects the flow from the past and to present, from tradition to modernism, and visually embodies the energy fused through the mixture. Through such process, Shin crosses between dimensions to connect each world through the medium of Ceramics. In these days, in which quarantine and non-contact have settled as the norm, the artist provides us with the traditional but therefore all the more novel perspective of “connection and harmony” that we need the most: Through Ceramics that still resonates with us even to now.
