1950년대 중반 이후 현대도예는 추상표현주의 도자를 시작으로 1960년대부터 지금까지 모더니즘(modernism)의 탈피와 포스트 모더니즘(post-modernism)으로 이르는 광대한 전개를 보이고 있다. 이 가운데 1960년대 반지적(反知的), 반형식적(反形式的)인 표현을 추구하는 펑크아트(funk art)의 성향과 대조를 이루는 세밀한 표현 양식의 슈퍼 오브제(super object)가 대두되는데 이는 로스앤젤레스(Los Angeles) 지역을 중심으로 극히 공예적 이면서도 현대적이고 마무리가 완벽한 스타일로 발전한다. 1970년대에 이르러 기(器)의 형태에 조각과 같은 조형성을 가미한 작품들이 등장하며 새로운 도자기 미학(美學)을 확립하게 되는데 랄프 바세라(Ralph Bacerra)는 이러한 변화의 중심에 있는 작가이자 교육자로서 기술적인 정교함을 추구하는 많은 작품을 남겼지만 국내에는 그의 공적에 비해 알려진 바가 미비한 수준이다. 이에 본 연구는 이러한 랄프의 경력과 발전 과정을 살펴보고, 그의 작품을 통해 다양한 현대도예 영역의 폭넓은 이해를 도모할 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.
따라서 본 논문은 크게 세 부분으로 나누어 랄프의 생애와 작품배경 및 발전과정을 살펴보고자 한다. 제 1장에서는 그의 생애를 통해 조형개념을 형성하게 된 배경을 알아보고, 제 2장에서는 작품에 쓰인 문양에 대해 살펴봄으로서 작품의 이론적 토대를 고찰해보고자 한다. 마지막으로 제 3장에서는 작업 발전 과정을 시기별로 나누어 분석하고자 한다.
랄프의 작품은 어떠한 의미나 이념보다는 많은 실험을 통해 얻어진 다양한 색채와 광택의 유약들로 채색된 장식적인 미(美)가 돋보였으며 기(器)의 전형적인 형태부터 여러 가지 형태를 조합하여 재구성하는 실험적인 형태에 이르기까지 다양한 방법으로 조형성을 제시하였다.

 

Abstract
Since the mid-1950s, the modern pottery used the abstract __EXPRESSION__ism ceramics as a start, and since the 1960s, it is showing massive deployment using the modernism exuviations and post-modernism. Amongst these, the Funk art seeks semi-intellectual and semi-formal representations. And its’ tendency and contrast are fulfilled by the fine-grained representation super object. This loomed super object, with Los Angeles as the central region, develops into an extremely crafty, modern and perfectly finishing style.
Reaching the 1970s, new Porcelain aesthetics were established due to the appearances of edited art works similar to the shape of plates and with additional data concerning the ‘plates’ shape. Due to this, a writer and an educator named Ralph Bacerra left lots of art works with the base knowledge of these changes. However, as compared with her exceptional achievements,
her deeds are less known domestically. Hence, this experience will search out for Ralph’s career and development stages. And through her art works, it is predicted to promote vast understanding of variety of Contemporary Ceramics.
Hence, in this thesis paper, it is divided into three major sections talking about Ralph’s life career, background of his artworks and his development.
