The purpose of this thesis is to examine the transition from modern to postmodern ceramics using the tool of logonomic destruction. It is also an effort to verify the confused situation of style in the late 20th century ceramic and to clarify some aspects of the situation. For this, two important artists, Bernard Leach and Peter Voulkos are selected. The formal procedure of the study is: First, select the main artworks which follow or represent the phases of the times. Second, establish the contrary category to analyze their works and investigate the adequacy of that category. Third, analyze the syntagmatic construction and curve paradigms of a series of artworks in order to identify the aesthetic changes that the artists underwent, step by step.
In the results of the analysis of teach and Voulkos, the contrary category: symmetry vs. asymmetry, is pertinent to grasping the diverse meanings, and the significance of the particular genres are fortified with it. Analyzing the curve paradigms, several main facts are discovered. Leach embodied modern logonomy in his works throughout his life. On the other hand, Voulkos embodied postmodern logonomy in his works in various ways.
In regards to Voulkos's times, his artistic subject was to destruct the concept and formality of traditional ceramic art, and to thereby acquire the freedom of process and production. This is verified by curve paradigms. Voulkos's achievement of his artistic goal finally brought about a postmodern style in contemporary ceramics.
In the study of the complex stylistic aspects of recent contemporary ceramics, understanding of the relationships between the 'vessel' genre and 'sculpture' genre in the ceramic field is important. In this thesis, a new approach to the analysis of contemporary ceramics is attempted by utilizing destruction theory and techniques to elucidate the contrary meanings represented by Leach and Voulkos.
