This thesis has been studied with viewpoint that some
considerations remain to be explored, like the unsystematic classification of
its style, its difficult concept establishment, and the poor unification of the
terminology as well, although ceramic art is very diversely developed now. In
chapter ¥±, the concept of Korean contemporary ceramic art is built on the basis
on three different kinds of ceramic art. One is the American modern ceramic art
which is founded on the abstract __EXPRESSION__ism. Another is the Japanese modern
ceramic art standing for the object ceramic art. Lastly is the Korean
traditional ceramic art which got through some historical restrictions such as
Japan Rule and The Korean War. The assortment of the ceramic works, which
have been produced in Korea since 1950, is also made on the basis of both the
established concept of the Korean contemporary ceramic art and some styles
classified by some theorists and professors at home and overseas. In
addition, through an examination of some previously made studies, the background
and development process of the contemporary ceramic art are outlined. They can
function as some evidence of the exhibition types and trend of the art which are
dealt in chapter ¥², ¥³. In chapter ¥², according to the central hosting body,
the thesis classifies the exhibitions of the contemporary ceramic arts(1980 to
2003) into several categories, such as, solo exhibition, small group exhibition,
special exhibition, competition, graduated exhibition, thesis exhibition, etc.
Then the changes of each category which have been made for the period of 24
years are statistically examined. In chapter ¥³, the exhibited ceramic works
are categorized into twelve types on the standard of the forms, the techniques,
and the production purpose. Model works of each type are also presented. In
chapter ¥´, the exhibition types and the trend of the exhibited works,
respectively described in chapter ¥², ¥³, are collectively analyzed. The changes
of the contemporary ceramic exhibition, which is shown by some statistics and
graphs such as the increase and decrease of each exhibition types, the trend of
the exhibited works, and social phenomena affecting the exhibitions, are
confirmed and the factors influencing those changes are also grasped. Lastly,
this thesis conclusively draws the characteristics of Korean contemporary
ceramic exhibition for the 23 years from the results of the classification and
analysis made in the previous chapters.
