The aim of this study is to make cinerary urns in porcelain, reinterpreting the
traditional Gol-ho with contemporary concept.
'Death' has always been the
sublimated motif aesthetically and religiously. Cinerary Urn is a historical
product in terms of the funeral culture. Articles buried in a tomb are not only
the practical things in our life but also the aesthetic things like a mirror of
that time.
First of all, this study plots academic understanding about the
traditional Gol-ho through research on forms and patterns as they change through
time. The origin of the Gol-ho is at the end of the Three Kingdoms
period(Koguryo, Baekjae and Shilla). In the 8th Century, the Gol-ho was
systematically developed reflecting society and culture in that time.
Based
on the historical analysis of the Gol-ho, I concentrated on making contemporary
Gol-ho in porcelain while unifying pratical and aesthetic considerations of our
time unified.
I would like to make a difference with quantity production of
the cinerary urn nowadays and emphasize the decoration of a 'House' motif using
Gol-ho in sense of modern style.
The increase of burial sites have created
many social problems and this calls for the use of the Gol-ho in ours
consciousness and increases it's demand. However, the Gol-ho in stone and wood
has limitation for high quality and expressing our personal character. For these
reason, creativity in the contemporary Gol-ho is necessary.
Consequently the
Gol-ho with practicality and aesthetic value has significance in contemporary
funeral culture and may well coexist between art and industry.
