  • The term "sexploration" is the combination of the words: sex and exploration. The term crosses a continuum of meanings, as sex resides in a very personal and private realm, although we are seeing that being tested in media on a daily basis. Throughout this thesis, the relationship between sex, society and art, specifically in clay, is explored. Because of the durability and permanence of fired clay, it is possible to study history through the manifestations and the stories told through ceramics. These findings provide an outline of a long tradition of sex within the field of ceramics, and their links to the sexual prowess of a culture; a peek into what was socially sexually accepted and denounced.
    With society¡¯s coming of age (sexually speaking), came along various opinions and considerations related to contemporary sexual issues. Not only was society practicing various sexual behaviors, it also began to be open to notions of the repercussions of such behavior: STD¡¯s and social disdain. However, as a result, openness towards sex, both welcomed and scorned by society, paved the path of heightened sexual awareness, which spanned around the globe.
    The relatively new rise in AIDS created a pandemic wave of death and fear. The need to understand and control this disease was paramount and attempts to create AIDS Awareness were at the forefront of national and global initiatives. The art world, which was also shaken by this catastrophe, would have their messages and opinions heard and seen around the world as well. In this thesis, examples of works of contemporary artists are examined in effort to understand social sexual/health issues.
    Further, the writer¡¯s works will be examined and viewed in attempts to re-invoke an awareness of AIDS. The 80¡¯s and 90¡¯s saw an infusion of AIDS-related artwork, however, still AIDS/HIV related cases surge throughout the world. Therefore, the viability of this work is not simply reinforced by the success and strength of the work itself, but also by public acceptance of this work. The question that is to be answered here is: Does society need to revive an awareness of AIDS? Or do we, as a society, have a grasp of the AIDS situation?
