Study on Symbols Expressed in Works
with the Motif of Plant Images

We see objects in two angles: One is to see within the line of vision and
understand the object and another is to see objects subconsciously or
unconsciously. Owing to the latter angle of vision, we seek meaning or symbols
other than the object itself from formative objects. Through ideas and emotion
of workers, objects in artistic works turn into symbols representing other
meaning beyond simple imitation.
This study is intended to approach plant
images as expressing media and to express plants as symbolic media rather than
reproduce them as they are.
In Chapter 1, this study examined plant images
expressed in Western still life pictures and Eastern pictures of flowers and
birds in the aspect of formativeness of plants.
In Chapter 2, such symbolist
artists as Georgia O' Keeffe and Judy Chicago who metaphorically expressed
femininity, Giuseppe Arcimboldo who satirized power, Joseph Stella who drew
desire as glee and Henri Rousseau who represented the world of fantastic dreams
were selected to examine symbolic meaning of plants expressed in their
works.
Chapter 3 was dedicated to the presentation of the author's work that
was produced with the motif of plant images based on the result of this study as
stated in Chapter 2.
